Role

We are seeking a Registered Nurse to provide clinical leadership, ensure high standards of patient care, and support efficient theatre operations within a multidisciplinary environment.

 

Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Demonstrate professional, compassionate, and patient-centred care at all times.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with doctors and the multidisciplinary team.
  • Supervise, guide, and mentor nursing staff to uphold clinical excellence.
  • Proactively manage patient satisfaction, concerns, and complaints.
  • Represent the theatre unit positively across departments.

 

Service Delivery

  • Ensure safe, clean, and well-prepared theatre and recovery environments.
  • Prepare theatres according to theatre lists, procedures, and doctor protocols.
  • Assist with anaesthesia preparation and ensure equipment functionality.
  • Perform patient and surgical site preparation using aseptic techniques.
  • Act as scrub nurse when required and support on-the-job staff training.
  • Manage recovery preparation, scheduled drugs, and fridge temperature monitoring.

 

Equipment, Legal Practice & Medication Management

  • Ensure availability, functionality, and safe storage of all equipment and instruments.
  • Conduct accurate patient assessments, documentation, and handovers.
  • Administer and manage medication, including Schedule 5 and 6 drugs, in line with legislation.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary care and continuous quality improvement initiatives.

 

Environment, Safety & Infection Control

  • Maintain a safe, hygienic, and compliant theatre environment.
  • Apply infection prevention and control practices consistently.
  • Participate in health and safety inspections, emergency drills, and incident reporting.

 

Teamwork & Employee Development

  • Promote teamwork, collaboration, and knowledge-sharing.
  • Facilitate training, coaching, and orientation of new staff.
  • Support the Unit Manager with first-line discipline when required.

 

Financial, Resource & Quality Management

  • Promote cost-effective theatre utilisation and responsible resource use.
  • Assist with stock control, theatre scheduling, and accurate charge sheet completion.
  • Identify risks, manage incidents and complaints, and contribute to quality improvement initiatives.

Education

Registered Professional Nurse with current SANC registration.

Post-basic qualification in Operating Theatre Nursing Science (advantageous/required – adjust as needed).

Experience and Requirements

  • Experience/trained in advance spinal surgery procedures in the operating theatre will be to your advantage.
  • Proven theatre experience, including recovery and scrubbing.

Other

  • Strong leadership, communication, and organisational skills.
  • Sound knowledge of legislation, infection control, and quality standards
