Role

Zuid-Afrikaans Hospital invites applications from experienced and dynamic nursing professionals for the position of Night Manager. This leadership role is critical in ensuring seamless hospital operations, patient safety, and quality care delivery during night shifts.


The successful candidate will provide operational oversight, clinical support, and quality assurance while fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, and compassionate care.

 

Responsibilities

Operational Leadership

  • Oversee all hospital departments during night shift, ensuring smooth and efficient functioning.
  • Supervise nursing, support, and administrative staff, ensuring compliance with labour regulations and hospital policies.
  • Assess patient acuity and ensure appropriate staffing levels.
  • Monitor and manage the availability of medication, equipment, and consumables.
  • Conduct routine quality control checks aligned with internal audits and accreditation standards.

 

Patient Care & Clinical Governance

  • Ensure safe and efficient patient admissions, transfers, and discharges.
  • Coordinate responses to medical and operational emergencies.
  • Enforce infection prevention and control protocols, PPE compliance, and critical care procedures.
  • Participate in quality assurance initiatives, including clinical audits and gap analyses.
  • Promote patient-centred care and ensure patient safety remains a top priority at all times.


Communication & Coordination

  • Act as the central point of communication between departments such as Emergency, ICU, and Theatre.
  • Ensure effective handover processes between day and night teams.
  • Compile detailed operational and incident reports for senior management.
  • Support and implement hospital-wide quality improvement initiatives.

 

Risk & Incident Management

  • Manage operational challenges and personnel matters effectively and professionally.
  • Investigate and document incidents, ensuring appropriate reporting and follow-up.
  • Ensure compliance with OHSC and COHSASA standards.
  • Maintain emergency preparedness, including fire drills, evacuations, and medical code readiness.

 

Administrative & Quality Oversight

  • Prepare comprehensive end-of-shift reports.
  • Monitor key performance indicators such as response times, patient satisfaction, and staff productivity.
  • Support internal and external audit processes.
  • Ensure adherence to all hospital policies and quality management systems.


Staff Development & Leadership

  • Mentor and support night staff, particularly newly appointed personnel.
  • Identify training and development needs.
  • Foster a culture of teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Promote resilience, professionalism, and ethical practice.

 

Education

General Diploma or Degree in Nursing

Nursing Management qualification (advantageous)

Experience and Requirements

Experience in a Private Hospital environment (essential)

Minimum of two years’ experience in a Nursing Management role
